The Cherangany member of  Parliament (MP) Joshua Kutuny is urging Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) to expedite investigations on Agriculture Cabinet Secretary (CS) Mwangi Kiunjuri over unwarranted payments made to maize cartels.

The MP who was speaking in Trans Nzoia County reiterated that maize cartels have already been paid Kshs 1.8 billion. “We want to know where the investigations have reached. I want to urge EACC to expedite the investigations so that those involved can face the law,” he said.

He added that they should have discussions with the state on maize pricing, “We are going to start talks to determine the prices this year, as farmers, we want Kshs 3,500,” he noted, adding they want to know the government’s set maize prices this year.

in July, a section of MPs revealed that maize cartels had already received payments and called for the resignation of Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri to pave way for investigations. They said a company called Commodity House had already received the Kshs 1.8 billion payment, in an unscrupulous manner.

Kutuny had outlined that this act disregarded the opinion of the Strategic Food Reserve. Saboti MP Caleb Amisi had supported the calls for the resignation of CS Kiunjuri, saying he had overseen the collapse of the major backbone of the economy, encompassing the sugar industry, sorghum, pyrethrum, tea and coffee industries.
