According to Agriculture Chief Administrative Secretary Dr. Andrew Tuimur, the wheat imports will be used to cushion the country against a projected deficit of the commodity.

Tiumur, “Wheat farmers in the country have been assured of a market for their produce once they harvest their crop even as the government plans to import 3 million metric tonnes in the next two years to cushion the country against a projected deficit.”

However, Nandi County Governor Stephen Sang is cautioning against importation now that the crop is nearly ready for harvesting.

At the same time, Dr. Tuimur is asking wheat millers to mop up the current harvest before being allowed to import. This is intended to protect the Kenyan market from another debacle occasioned by unjustified imports that flood the local market.

The country produces 400,000 metric tons of wheat annually against an annual consumption of 900,000 metric tons. They were speaking at a farmer’s field day in Nandi County.
