New technology enables potato growers in Nyeri harvest seeds in just three weeks
Potato farmers in Nyeri won’t grapple anymore with shortage of seeds after as seeds growers adopted new technologies, aimed at promoting the availability of clean seeds to farmers in all potato growing zones in the country.
Referred to as ‘rooted apical cutting technology,’ involves production of potato seeds through stem cutting which
makes it easier to propagate the seedlings before transplanting.
“The cuttings are produced from tissue culture plantlets in a screen house and after rooting, they are planted in the fields. This is different from producing potatoes from mini-tubers. The resultant cutting is similar to a nursery grown seedling except that it is grown through vegetative means and not from the seeds, ” explains Daniel Mbiri a researcher with the International Potato Council (CIP).
He was speaking during a potato fair at the Wambugu Agriculture Training Centre in Nyeri that was organised by the International Potato Council (CIP), Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (Agra), Kenya Agriculture Livestock Research Organisation, the National Potato Council and the County Government of Nyeri.
