Non-profit research group from Pennsylvania State University have developed PlantVillage Nuru – an innovative offline smartphone application that diagnoses crops in real time and provide advice and prevention methods for the diseases. All a farmer needs to do is point the phone with the App on a diseased plant and Nuru will run an Artificial Intelligence scan to cassava and maize leaves for any signs of pest or diseases damage.

The project director Dr. John Chelal (Plant pathologist at Moi University) together with a team of graduates are engaging many farmers in Western Kenya. The team has been testing the new system by training and handing out phones to lead farmers who bring insights to their neighbors in the community.

“When I got the phone with the PlantVillage Nuru app, I could walk around in my farm knowing about CBSD, CMD and CGM. It has helped me educate my fellow farmers. I now know how to detect crops diseases in my farm and how to prevent spread of infection to other crops. I now know that cassava affected by CBSD is unhealthy and that is the reason my cassava flour was bitter. It has also educated me about Fall Armyworm affecting maize and how to mitigate it,” Says Roseline Akochi, a lead farmer from Amukura in Teso South.

In addition to its diagnostic work, the App has a climate smart feature to help mitigate future climate change. This feature can tell whether your crop(s) is healthy or stressed using satellite imagery and then advice you on the most likely cause of stress and how to mitigate with low cost option.

“Farmers now have the option to add the location of their farm to get real-time updated weather information and climate smart advice related to specific crops,” says David Hughes, associate professor of entomology and biology, which led the development of the App with FAO.

PlantVillage has recently launched an SMS program in Kenya in hopes of reaching out to farmers without access to smartphones. Farmers can subscribe to the SMS platform by texting the word ‘Join’ to 20307. Farmers are able to text and ask questions about their crops and receive weekly weather updates and general climate smart advice for their region for Free.
