How to grow Washington orange in Kenya
The Washington navel orange is propagated by grafting and cuttings.
- While planting dig a hole 2ft by 2ft, mix the top soil with half bucket manure and still Washington navel oranges can be planted in large containers. Fertilizing should be done after the first flush of leaves. Apply N.PK, two table spoonful and this should be repeated after each and every three months but as the tree nears flowering, apply fertilizer with micro elements to enhance good fruit growth.
- Ensure your seedling gets enough water. Water twice a week.
- Weeding should be thorough, as weeds compete for nutrients with the orange tree and they harbor pests which eventually attacks orange tree.
- Pruning should be done yearly by removing the dead, broken and diseased branches .
- Harvesting is done by tasting a single orange on the tree seven months after flowering, and repeat every two weeks until the flavor of the oranges is sweet enough for you.
Characteristics of Washington Navel Oranges
Most navel orange trees aren’t extremely vigorous trees, and the Washington navel orange tree is no exception to that rule. Their canopies are round and drooping and the tree grows to a moderate size when mature.
The large round oranges this tree produces have a pebbled orange rind that peels easily. The navel, which is actually a small secondary fruit, will occasionally protrude from the fruit’s apex.
Size and Spacing
A full-sized Washington navel orange tree will grow to be between seven and 15 feet tall. The width of a mature tree is between eight and 12 feet. The dwarf variety of the Washington navel orange tree reaches a height of between three and six feet tall.
Pollination
The Washington navel orange tree doesn’t require a pollinator. Note that the flowers on the Washington navel orange tree lack viable pollen, so they will not serve for pollinating other citrus trees, either. Since they lack viable ovules and functional pollen, this citrus tree produces fruits that are seedless.
