How to access Government subsidized fertilizer in Kenya

To access the Government subsidized fertilizers, a farmer must be digitally registered and the digital registration is ongoing at the Assistant Chiefโ€™s offices countrywide. The farmer registration will continue to cover all farmers across the different crop production enterprises.

Farmers will access the subsidized fertilizer by dialling *707# on their phones to know the number of bags they are entitled to. They will then choose the nearest Agrovet Shop and pay via Mpesa and an electronic receipt will be generated. They will use the receipt to collect the fertilizer from the Agrovet shop. Each bag will cost Kshs. 3,500.

For the 2023 long rains season, 300,000 metric tonnes of planting fertilizer amounting to 6 million bags will be available. ย For top dressing, the government will avail 200,000 metric tonnes amounting to 4 million bags.

So far, 1431 farmers across the country, in the counties of Narok, Nakuru, Migori, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, West Pokot, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Bungoma, Elgeyo Marakwet have accessed the fertilizer according to the Ministry of Agriculture. The bags delivered are 287,000 translating to 14300 metric tonnes.

Prices of Government subsidized fertilizer in Kenya

The Government has availed Kshs. 3.55 Billion to subsidize 71,000 metric tonnes (1.42 million x 50 kgs bags) of fertilizer for growing food crops during the short rains. The Ministry says this quantity will support the cultivation of approximately 1.4 million acres.

The fertilizer will be availed from the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) effective 19thย September 2022. Individual farmers will be entitled to 100 bags of fertilizer (each weighing 50 kg). The Ministry urges farmers n the respective counties to visit NCPB depots or sub-depots to access the fertilizer.

It is estimated that if used well, fertilizer use can increase food and cash crop yields by up to 50%,โ€ says the Ministry of Agriculture.

1. Why is there Government Fertilizer Subsidy program in Kenya?

The Ministry Of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Cooperatives (MOALF&C) is implementing Presidential directive on provision of subsidized fertilizer to all farmers in all counties to increase food production during the short rains season of 2022.

2. Who qualifies for the subsidized fertilizer?

A duly registered farmer whose details are in the register provided to National Cereals & Produce Board (NCPB) qualifies.

3. What do I need to be able to buy subsidized fertilizer?

You need to appear in person at the nearest NCPB depot with your original identity card and your name must be in the register.

4. Can I buy subsidized fertilizer on behalf of somebody else?

No, that is not acceptable.

5. What if am not registered?

You are requested to visit your County or Sub county or Ward Agricultural Office for registration.

6. Do I need to pay for registration as a farmer?

No, registration is free of charge. You only need to visit the nearest County, Sub-county or ward Agricultural Office.

7. Where can I get the fertilizer from?

You can get the subsidized fertilizer from any of the nearest NCPB depots within the county where
you are registered.

8. How many bags of fertilizer can a farmer buy?

Each registered farmer is entitled to a combined maximum of loo bags for both planting and top-dressing fertilizer per season depending on the registered acreage of the land prepared for planting.

  • A farmer is allowed two bags each for planting and top dressing per acre, e.g.
  • A farmer with 3 acres of land can buy up to a maximum of 12 bags
  • A farmer with 15 acres can buy up to 60 bags
  • A farmer with over 25 acres can buy up to 100 bags

9. How much do I pay for the subsidized fertilizers?

10. How do I make the payment?

There are two ways of making payments at NCPB upon approval by depot manager:
a) M-pesa transactions through NCPB Till Number displayed at the Depot directly from your mobile
phone number.
b) Bank account deposit as provided by the Depot/Silo Manager.
c) Payments from Farmer cooperatives societies/organization must be made directly from their bank account directly to NCPB bank account provided by the respective depot/silo manager.

Cash payments at the depot are NOT accepted.

11. Can a farmer buy on credit?

No, farmers are required to pay before collecting the fertilizer.

12. Can I buy all the subsidized fertilizer I need once?

No, you can buy what you need any time as long as the maximum allowed as per your acreage is not exceeded

13. Can one buy the fertilizer and resell to others?

NO, this is ILLEGAL.

14. Can Co-operatives and farmer organizations benefit from the program?

Yes: All farmer co-operatives and other farmerโ€™s organizations shall benefit if legally registered. Each individual co-operative member must be registered and their names must appear in the farmers register held by NCPB Depot/Silo.

15. At what time can I buy the fertilizer?

All NCPB depots are open Monday to Friday from 8.00am to 5.00pm.
