Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o on Tuesday signed a KSh 30 billion deal with a United Kingdom firm United Green to increase food production in the region.

“Signed a milestone partnership between a UK’s, United Green and Kisumu County 42 Lake ventures Company. This US$250 Million (Ksh 30b) agriculture and food security investment programme will revolutionise food production and general Agriculture in the entire Lake region,” Nyong’o said via Twitter.

Governor Nyong’o and UG Director and Head of Agriculture and Food Investments, Rod Bassett signed the first phase of the agreement back in May in Kisumu.

The sustainable agri-food project is anticipated to provide the local farmers with sustainable agricultural methodologies, farming services and agro-industrial facilities to boost production.

The multi-million project also targets creating new markets for the farming communities in the Lake Basin region and making significant contributions to the region’s food security.

The transformative agriculture venture will be implemented in a five-year period and is projected to reduce the country’s dependence on imported food by Sh23 billion annually thus reducing Kenya’s trade deficit.
