Diversify Crop Production, Government Asks farmers
The ministry of Agriculture is asking farmers to diversify crop production.
According to the cabinet secretary (CS) Mwangi Kiunjuri to, the new venture would avoid over-relying on only a few crops.
The CS was addressing farmers during the Avocado Farmers Field Day in Kimulot, Konoin-Bomet County.
Bomet County is located in the former Rift Valley Province of Kenya with Agriculture is the backbone of the county’s revenue.
Among the food crops grown in the area, maize tops the lead as it is the staple food of the county.
Beans, millet, Irish potatoes, sorghum cabbage, onions, cabbages, bananas and pineapples are grown both for subsistence and sell in the county and other distant markets mainly Nairobi and various counties in the former Nyanza Province.
Since the county is among the densely populated in the region, there is enough labor force that has mainly concentrated around agricultural areas.
Agriculture is one of the main sector where investment opportunities largely lie. It can be of great impact if a maize milling factory can be set in the county since maize is planted in both large and small scale.
