Farmers in the Coastal region have been urged to embrace new advanced hybrid maize varieties that have been designed to adapt to the hot coastal climatic conditions while still producing high yields.

The maize varieties PH 01 and and PH 04 have been researched and improved to suit the climatic conditions at the coastal region to help the farmers contribute to the countries food basket.

Kenya Seed Company managing director Sammy Chepsiror has said that the new varieties are an improvement from previous breeds to survive the harsh weather conditions.

He said that with the changing climatic conditions, it is prudent that farmers embrace the advanced the improved varieties so as to reduce losses and increase yields.

Chairperson Purity Ngirici said that the varieties can also do well in other hot climatic conditions such as Kisumu adding that the farmers in those areas should embrace maize farming.

Ngirici said for a long time, farmers in the coast and Kisumu have not been fully engaging in Maize production due to the harsh hot climatic conditions adding that with the new hybrid varieties they are now well placed to engage in Maize farming.
