The transformation of the seed industry following the liberalization efforts by the government in the 1990s has been nothing short of remarkable. With the advent of #SeedCertification, the agricultural landscape witnessed a surge in the number of seed companies striving to meet the demands of the farming community. What was once a modest count of only 15 seed companies has now shot to over 220, an impressive indication of the sector’s growth and vitality. Kephis certified seeds

The significance of certified seed cannot be overstated. These seeds, meticulously examined and approved, guarantee a high level of quality, enabling farmers to achieve optimal yields. It is this commitment to providing certified seed that has driven the expansion of seed companies across the nation. From small-scale enterprises to large-scale corporations, these diverse companies have united in their mission to supply farmers with the resources they need to prosper.

A pertinent question arises: What led to the decline in the utilization of uncertified seed? Previously, the statistics were rather concerning, with uncertified seeds accounting for a substantial proportion of approximately 30% – 40%. However, due to concerted efforts to raise awareness about the hazards associated with planting uncertified seeds, significant headway has been made in reducing their prevalence. Farmers have been enlightened about the potential risks and drawbacks, prompting a shift towards certified seeds for enhanced productivity.

Moreover, labeling practices have played an instrumental role in guiding farmers towards making informed choices. Clear and comprehensive labeling ensures that farmers can distinguish between certified and uncertified seeds, empowering them to select the most advantageous option for their agricultural endeavors. This transparency has been key in fostering trust and credibility between seed companies and farmers.

“The use of our world-recognized & accredited labs continue to provide results that are credible and allow us to advise farmers appropriately as well as assure trading partners of the compliance of our export produce in accordance to market requirements.” Said KEPHIS MD, Prof. Mutui during the 25 years celebrations

This remarkable achievement in the growth and transformation of the seed industry owes much to the tireless efforts of the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS) over the past 25 years. As the regulatory authority responsible for seed certification and quality assurance, KEPHIS has played a pivotal role in ensuring the integrity and safety of certified seeds.

Under the guidance of KEPHIS, the seed industry has flourished, surpassing all expectations. The agency’s steadfast commitment to upholding stringent standards and conducting rigorous inspections has instilled a sense of confidence among farmers. KEPHIS has relentlessly worked towards creating an enabling environment for seed companies to thrive while safeguarding the interests of the farming community.

With their extensive expertise and proactive measures, KEPHIS has successfully raised awareness about the importance of using certified seeds. Through education campaigns, training programs, and outreach initiatives, they have effectively disseminated information on the dangers associated with uncertified seeds. By equipping farmers with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions, KEPHIS has empowered them to choose seeds that are not only of superior quality but also aligned with industry guidelines.

In collaboration with seed companies and industry stakeholders, KEPHIS has also spearheaded initiatives to improve labeling practices. Clear and accurate labeling ensures that farmers can easily identify and differentiate certified seeds from uncertified ones, avoiding any inadvertent use of substandard alternatives. The efforts to standardize labeling have contributed to a more transparent and reliable seed market, ultimately benefiting both farmers and seed companies.

The success of KEPHIS is further evidenced by the outcomes of court cases related to seed certification. Through their unwavering commitment to enforcing legislation and regulations, KEPHIS has secured favorable judgments that not only serve as warnings to potential violators but also reaffirm the importance of adhering to seed certification protocols. By actively pursuing legal action against offenders, KEPHIS has effectively discouraged the use of uncertified seeds, safeguarding the interests of farmers and the agricultural industry as a whole.

KEPHIS has also exerted efforts to strengthen penalties for the sale and use of uncertified seeds. Recognizing the need for strong deterrents, the agency has advocated for more stringent penalties, serving as a deterrent to those considering non-compliance with certification regulations. The increased penalties send a clear message that the use of uncertified seeds will not be tolerated, further reinforcing the importance of using certified seeds and upholding quality standards.

In celebrating 25 years of dedicated service, KEPHIS has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to the growth, regulation, and success of the seed industry in Kenya. Through their continuous efforts, the number of seed companies has seen an exponential rise, providing farmers with a wide array of certified seed options. KEPHIS’ achievements have propelled the agricultural sector towards greater productivity, improved livelihoods, and sustainable agriculture practices.

The exponential growth from a mere 15 companies to over 220 highlights the industry’s resilience and its dedication to providing certified seeds to farmers. The decline in the utilization of uncertified seeds, from 30% – 40% to a mere 5%, can be attributed to a combination of factors, including heightened awareness, improved labeling practices, successful court cases, and stricter penalties.
