Fish farmers in Nyeri left stranded as investor goes underground
Fish farmers in Nyeri have been left stranded after an investor who had promised them a market and sold them input worth thousands in Israel went underground.
Speaking to the Agriculture executive Robert Thuo while presenting their petition, the farmers said they were shortchanged by a man who posed as an expert after paying some money.
Thika-based Wonderland Fisheries owner Samson Gichuhi is alleged to have used titles from the Ministry of Agriculture to woo the farmers into the project. More than 200 farmers from different parts of the county have subscribed to the project.
Efforts to reach Mr Gichuhi were futile as his phone was not picked and text messages had not been returned by press time. The farmers said they had been promised a ready market for their fish in Israel after they entered into a contact with the firm last August.
“He monitored the ponds for three months and was to come buy the fish after six months. But he disappeared,” said David Macharia, a farmer.
The farmers said Mr Gichuhi claimed to be a PhD holder who had worked in Israel for the last three years and had been sent by the Department of Fisheries.
“He purported to have come home with a new technology which he claimed was very profitable,” said Mr Peter Mwathi, a farmer.
