Mango farmers in Makueni County have received 15,000 pheromone fruit fly traps in a fresh effort to curb the devastating pest and safeguard production. The donation, made by TradeMark Africa with support from the European Union, was officially handed over on Friday.

Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili received the consignment on behalf of the county government, noting that the intervention had come at a critical time during the peak mango season. She said the initiative would improve yields, cut post-harvest losses, and raise farmers’ incomes.

“The traps will make a significant difference for our farmers by reducing losses caused by fruit flies. This is in line with our commitment to strengthen agriculture as a key pillar of our economy,” she said.

The technology uses pheromones to attract fruit flies into a biopesticide killing chamber, offering a safe and environmentally sustainable alternative to pesticide spraying, which has been linked to health and environmental risks.

Mulili was accompanied by Agriculture CECM Elizabeth N. Muli, who commended the partnership, describing it as a milestone in Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr’s agenda of enhancing agricultural productivity and creating opportunities for rural households.

TradeMark Africa’s Program Manager for Business Competitiveness, Samuel Simon Konzolo, said Makueni was chosen as a beneficiary because it is among Kenya’s top mango-producing regions. He added that the support would strengthen the county’s competitiveness in both local and export markets.

Experts estimate that fruit fly infestation accounts for up to 40 percent of mango yield losses in Kenya, with significant economic implications for smallholder farmers. The new traps are expected to help Makueni farmers cut these losses, enhance fruit quality, and improve access to high-value markets.
