More than 10,000 smallholder farmers in Kajiado West sub-county are poised to significantly increase their agricultural output following the official reopening of the Nguruman Irrigation Scheme. The vital infrastructure, which was severely damaged by flooding in early 2024, has been fully rehabilitated through a government investment of Sh396 million.

The scheme’s restoration is a major development for food security in the region. It supports approximately 2,000 acres of irrigated farmland, which serves as a crucial food source for several markets, including Magadi, Kiserian, Ongata Rongai, and Nairobi’s large Marikiti wholesale market.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Principal Secretary for Irrigation Ephantus Kimotho emphasized the project’s role in building climate resilience. He stated that the rehabilitation included modernizing the scheme to support climate-smart agricultural practices, which help farmers adapt to unpredictable weather patterns.

“The completion of this work means water is now reliably reaching farms, and farmers have already begun resuming irrigation,” Kimotho said. “This project stands as a clear example of how strategic investment in water infrastructure can transform rural livelihoods and strengthen community resilience against climate change.”

A key feature of the rehabilitated scheme is its extensive network. Water is now piped over a distance of 51 kilometers, providing a dependable supply that enables farmers to move beyond subsistence crops. With secure access to water, farmers can cultivate high-value cash crops throughout the year, directly boosting household incomes and stimulating the local economy.

The reopening of the Nguruman Irrigation Scheme marks a return to stability and productivity for thousands of households. It underscores the government’s focus on repairing critical agricultural infrastructure to safeguard national food production systems against increasing climate-related disruptions.
