Kenya’s economic growth would be easily achieved if governors helped increase the agricultural production in their regions.

Governors have been urged to step in and help farmers in their respective counties to export more farm products to the European Union market.

Kenya’s ambassador to Belgium and the union’s headquarters in Brussels Johnson Weru urged Council of Governors chairman Peter Munya to invite him to a forum of the county chiefs to explain the export avenues that had been opened up at the intervention of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

He said Kenya’s potential of growing its economy at seven per cent and beyond would be easily achieved if governors took adequate steps to increase agricultural production in their areas while at the same time meeting quality standards set by the union.

RESTRICTING FACTORS ELIMINATED

“Let them help farmers to produce products which are within the EU regulations because the EU is the biggest trading partner with Kenya,” he said in Brussels, Belgium.

President Kenyatta is expected to arrive in Brussels today to address an EU forum on development dubbed: Sustainable Development Goals; Our World our Future at the invitation of the union’s President Donald Tusk. It was not clear whether he would be accompanied by any governor.

Mr Weru said the President met the union’s commissioner of trade in March where some of the factors restricting agricultural exports to the European market were eliminated.
