The government of Kenya, through the Ministry of Agriculture, has announced plans to purchase one million bags of maize from farmers across the country at a price of Ksh.3,500 per 90kg bag.

This move is aimed at building up the national strategic food reserve, currently standing at only 30% of the proposed capacity.

In a statement signed by Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Dr. Andrew Karanja, the ministry said this initiative is not only a step towards strengthening food security but also a measure to support farmers financially.

The strategy aligns with the government’s Bottom Up Economic Transformation Agenda, which seeks to improve farmers’ profit margins and ensure greater economic stability in the agriculture sector.

According to a circular released on October 31, the established purchase price is also expected to stabilize the cost of maize flour across the nation.

The Agriculture CS said the current price of unga stands at Ksh.130 per 2 kg packet, a figure expected to become more consistent with the introduction of this purchase scheme.

Furthermore, the ministry highlighted that favourable weather, particularly the prolonged rains experienced in 2024, has significantly boosted maize production.

Projections for the year are set at 75,972,332 bags of 50 kg maize, a promising yield that could help manage future supply challenges.
