The initiative is being implemented by the Cereal Growers Association (CGA) in collaboration with the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) and the Ministry of Agriculture.

A Vision for Nutritious Meals and Sustainable Agriculture

The Nyota Beans Seed Distribution Initiative aims to provide over 400,000 school children across five counties with nutritious meals using high-iron and zinc-rich beans and staple cereals. In Embu County alone, 85 schools will cultivate 850 acres of Nyota beans, a drought-resistant variety selected for its high nutritional value and adaptability to the local climate.

By integrating school farms into the feeding program, the initiative not only enhances food security but also reduces feeding costs for schools, making the program more sustainable. Additionally, students will gain hands-on agricultural skills, equipping them with knowledge that extends beyond the classroom and into their future livelihoods.

A Broader Mission: The Advancing Availability of Biofortified Foods for Institutional Markets Project (AABFIMP)

The seed distribution initiative is part of the larger Advancing Availability of Biofortified Foods for Institutional Markets Project (AABFIMP), funded by the Rockefeller Foundation through the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). Implemented by CGA, KALRO, and HarvestPlus, this two-year pilot project spans five counties: Elgeyo Marakwet, Bomet, Narok, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi. Running from May 1, 2023, to April 30, 2025, the project seeks to improve nutrition by increasing the production and consumption of biofortified crops in schools and communities.

Key Objectives and Outcomes

The AABFIMP focuses on two primary outcomes:

  1. Increased production and productivity of biofortified foods for institutional markets.
  2. Strengthened market linkages between farmers and institutional suppliers, including schools, to enhance the availability of biofortified foods.

The project addresses critical challenges in the High Iron Beans (HIB) value chain, such as low adoption of high-yielding varieties, limited access to seeds and extension services, and inadequate market linkages. By promoting nutrient-rich crops biofortified with zinc, iron, and vitamins, the initiative aims to combat nutrition deficiencies and improve food security in Kenya.

Project Impact

CGA will train 15,000 smallholder farmers, cultivating over 15,000 acres of land under the HIB value chain. Through a network of 100 Village-Based Advisors (VBAs), the project will facilitate access to inputs, extension services, and markets. By the end of the two-year pilot, the initiative aims to produce and aggregate over 15,000 metric tons of HIB, reaching over 400,000 school-going children with nutrient-rich meals.

The VBAs will play a pivotal role in raising awareness, promoting HIB adoption, and addressing first- and last-mile challenges in the value chain. This grassroots approach ensures that farmers receive end-to-end support, from planting to market access.
