West Pokot Farmers Receive 184,560 Kilograms of Certified Maize Seeds Plus Avocado and Coffee Seedlings
West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin has rolled out over 700 bales of certified maize seed, equivalent to 184,560 kilograms, comprising DH04 and 6213 varieties sourced from Kenya Seed Company. The launch took place at Chelang’a Gardens Road in Makutano Town where the Governor handed over a two-kilogram packet of maize seeds to a farmer before flagging off the consignment for distribution across the county.

In addition to the maize seeds, farmers have received 1,000 avocado seedlings and 3,000 coffee seedlings sourced from the county nursery. The seeds and seedlings will be distributed at the ward level across the county, allowing farmers to access them conveniently from designated village venues.
Speaking during the launch, Governor Kachapin said the programme ensures farmers plant on time with quality seeds, boosting yields and reducing the risk of food shortages. “Agriculture remains the backbone of our economy. When we support farmers, we are securing food and income for families across the county,” he said.
The distribution targets farmers across all wards in West Pokot, with the county government prioritising timely access to inputs ahead of the planting season. The DH04 and 6213 maize varieties are known for their drought tolerance and high yield potential, making them suitable for West Pokot’s climatic conditions. The avocado and coffee seedlings are part of the county’s diversification strategy to introduce high-value cash crops that can generate long-term income for farming households. The county nursery has been producing seedlings to support this initiative, reducing reliance on external suppliers and ensuring farmers receive healthy, well-adapted planting materials.
Farmers have been encouraged to collect their allocations early to avoid last-minute congestion and to prepare their land properly before planting. The county government has also deployed agricultural extension officers to provide technical support on planting, crop management, and post-harvest handling to maximise the benefits of the programme. Governor Kachapin reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting agriculture as a pathway to food security, poverty reduction, and economic transformation in West Pokot.
