Government Raises Wheat Price to KSh 5,100 Per Bag to Support Local Farmers

The Government has increased the producer price of locally produced wheat from KSh 4,750 to KSh 5,100 per 90-kilogram bag for the 2026 harvesting season in a move aimed at improving farmer incomes and encouraging increased local wheat production.

The revised price was announced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development following consultations involving the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA), the Cereal Growers Association, wheat farmers and the Cereal Millers Association.

According to the Ministry, the new producer price will apply at designated grain aggregation centres as the Government begins its nationwide wheat mop-up exercise ahead of planned wheat imports.

The intervention is expected to benefit more than 2,000 wheat farmers across the country’s major wheat-growing counties, including Narok, Nakuru, Meru, Laikipia, Nyandarua and Uasin Gishu.

The announcement comes as Kenya records a decline in wheat production during the 2026 season. The country’s wheat harvest is projected at approximately one million bags, down from 1.7 million bags harvested during the previous season.

Government officials attributed the decline largely to adverse weather conditions that affected production in several wheat-growing regions.

Despite the lower harvest, the Ministry says it remains committed to revitalizing the wheat sector through a series of targeted interventions designed to improve productivity and strengthen food security.

Among the measures being implemented are fertilizer subsidy programmes aimed at lowering production costs for farmers, expanded agricultural mechanization to improve efficiency, wider access to improved wheat seed varieties and increased commercialization of agricultural land.

The Government is also promoting climate-smart farming practices and strengthening pest and disease management programmes to improve crop resilience and reduce production losses.

Officials say the combination of these interventions is intended to increase domestic wheat production while making the sector more competitive and profitable for farmers.

Kenya continues to import a significant proportion of its wheat to meet growing demand from millers and consumers. Increasing local production has therefore remained a key priority in reducing the country’s dependence on imports and strengthening national food security.

The Government says supporting local wheat growers through better producer prices and improved production technologies will encourage more farmers to invest in wheat cultivation while improving household incomes in major grain-producing regions.

At the same time, officials say increasing domestic wheat production will help stabilize the country’s grain supply and contribute to keeping flour prices affordable for consumers.

The revised producer price forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Kenya’s cereal sector by improving market incentives, enhancing productivity and creating a more sustainable wheat value chain capable of meeting the country’s growing demand.

Agricultural stakeholders have welcomed continued consultations between the Government, farmers and industry players, saying coordinated policy decisions are essential in building a resilient wheat industry that supports both producers and consumers.
