Nyeri Agripreneurs are undergoing specialized training under NAVCDP to strengthen digital agricultural extension services, improve farmer productivity, and accelerate agricultural commercialization across Nyeri County.

Nyeri Agripreneurs Trained to Drive Digital Agriculture and Strengthen Farmer Extension Services

NYERI, Kenya – The County Government of Nyeri has launched a new phase of training for young agripreneurs aimed at modernizing agricultural extension services and accelerating the adoption of digital farming technologies across the county.

The initiative, implemented through the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP), has brought together the second cohort of agripreneurs at the Wambugu Agricultural Training Centre, where participants are being equipped with technical, business and digital skills to support farmers and promote commercially driven agriculture.

The programme seeks to bridge the gap between technology and smallholder farmers by creating a new generation of digitally skilled extension providers capable of delivering real-time advisory services and improving productivity across priority value chains.

Speaking during the training, Nyeri County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Livestock and Aquaculture Development James Wachihi said the programme marks the beginning of the agripreneurs’ incubation phase, during which they will become key partners in transforming agriculture through innovation and technology.

“The Agripreneur Model is designed to strengthen agricultural extension by combining digital solutions with field-based advisory services. These young professionals will play a critical role in helping farmers access information, improve production and commercialize their enterprises,” Wachihi said.

Participants are receiving practical training on the implementation of the NAVCDP Agripreneur Model, operation of the Agripreneurs Management System, digital agriculture technologies, innovation management, communication and grievance handling, the KYF App, Hybrid Extension Architecture, and strategies for rolling out digital advisory services at the community level.

County officials say the programme is expected to improve the quality and reach of extension services while increasing farmers’ access to modern production technologies, market information and digital agricultural solutions.

The initiative also targets youth employment by creating business opportunities for agricultural professionals who will offer advisory services while supporting the commercialization of farming.

Through the programme, agripreneurs are expected to work closely with farmers, producer organizations and county extension officers to promote climate-smart agriculture, improve productivity and strengthen agricultural value chains.

Nyeri County says the investment aligns with its broader strategy of leveraging innovation and technology to build a more competitive, resilient and market-oriented agricultural sector capable of increasing farmer incomes and improving food security.
