Meru dairy farmers will earn KSh 52 per litre of milk from August 1, 2026, following a government announcement aimed at increasing farmer incomes and reducing the cost of dairy production.

Meru Dairy Farmers to Earn KSh 52 Per Litre Under New Government Plan

The new milk price was announced during the 11th Annual Meru Dairy Farmers Field Day held at the ASK Gitoro Showground in Meru County.

The event was attended by Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki, Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, Cooperatives and MSMEs Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, and Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eric Mugaa.

New Feed Mill to Reduce Production Costs

The government also commissioned Phase I of the Meru Maziwa Millers Feed Mill in Mitunguu, a project expected to lower the cost of livestock feed for dairy farmers.

The new facility will reduce the price of a 50-kilogram bag of dairy feed to KSh 1,800 from the current market price of between KSh 2,200 and KSh 2,300.

Officials said lower feed costs will reduce production expenses, improve profitability and increase returns for dairy farmers.

More Support for Dairy Farmers

The government also announced measures to improve dairy productivity, including subsidized sexed semen whose cost has been reduced from KSh 7,000 to KSh 1,400.

Additional milk coolers will also be supplied to improve milk collection, reduce post-harvest losses and expand access to formal markets.

The investments form part of wider efforts to strengthen Kenya’s dairy value chain and improve the quality of milk delivered to processors.

Meru Dairy Sector Targets Higher Production

Meru Central Dairy Cooperative Union, which serves more than 160,000 farmers, remains one of the country’s largest dairy cooperatives.

The government said the latest investments are expected to support its target of increasing Kenya’s annual milk production from 5.5 billion litres to 10 billion litres while improving incomes for dairy farming households.

Officials said continued investment in feed production, breeding technologies and milk handling infrastructure will play a key role in making Kenya’s dairy sector more competitive and profitable.
