Kenya and Madagascar Forge Livestock Development Partnership to Boost Farmer Incomes
Kenya and Madagascar have forged a livestock development partnership focused on research, innovation, and technical collaboration to improve farmer livelihoods and boost productivity.

Kenya and Madagascar are deepening their ties in the livestock sector. The two countries held talks on expanding cooperation in research, innovation, investment and technical collaboration.
The meeting brought together Hon. Jonathan Mueke, Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, and Madagascar’s Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Dr. Riana Nantenaina Randrianomenjanahary. The discussions focused on how the two countries can learn from each other to build stronger livestock industries.
Madagascar is in the process of implementing its Livestock Master Plan. The country sees Kenya as a valuable partner because Kenya has built one of Africa’s most successful livestock sectors over the years.
Kenya is the continent’s leading milk producer. The country has made significant progress in animal breeding, feed technologies, disease control and artificial insemination. Madagascar wants to tap into that knowledge.
The talks covered a wide range of areas. These included dairy production, feed and forage technologies, poultry systems, small ruminant production and research-to-farmer delivery models. The two sides also discussed technical collaboration in animal health and genetics.
The meeting was part of a broader effort to strengthen agricultural cooperation between the two countries. Kenya has been sharing knowledge with Madagascar through various South-South collaboration frameworks. The livestock sector is now a priority area.
Madagascar has large cattle herds but productivity remains low. The country is looking to increase milk and meat production while improving market access for livestock farmers. Partnerships with Kenya are seen as critical to achieving these goals.
Both sides expressed commitment to deepening the partnership. They agreed to continue working together to implement the initiatives discussed.
The Kenya and Madagascar livestock development partnership is a reminder that African countries have a lot to learn from each other. Kenya has built its livestock sector through decades of research, investment and policy reform. Sharing that experience with neighbours is a strategic move that benefits everyone.
The work is already underway. More discussions will follow. Farmers in both countries stand to gain from this collaboration. The future of livestock farming in East Africa and beyond looks brighter because of partnerships like this one.
