Nyandarua milk cooler programme has reached 30 units after the government delivered another cooler to Ol-Kalau Dairy Cooperative, boosting milk quality, reducing losses and supporting dairy farmers.

The government has delivered its 30th milk cooler in Nyandarua County, a move aimed at improving milk quality, reducing post-harvest losses and increasing incomes for dairy farmers.

The latest milk cooler was handed over to Ol-Kalau Dairy Cooperative during a Farmers’ Field Day held in Ol’Kalou, Nyandarua County.

Principal Secretary for Livestock Development Jonathan Mueke said the investment will strengthen milk aggregation, enabling farmers to preserve milk quality and access better market opportunities.

The delivery brings the total number of government-supported milk coolers in Nyandarua County to 30, reflecting ongoing efforts to improve dairy value chains under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

Farmers Receive Animal Health and Breeding Support

The field day also brought together government agencies that offered farmers technical training and livestock support services.

Officials from the Kenya Veterinary Vaccines Production Institute (KEVEVAPI), Kenya Dairy Board (KDB), Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRC) and Kenya Veterinary Board (KVB) trained farmers on dairy production, animal health, breeding and best management practices.

The services were aimed at improving livestock productivity while helping farmers adopt better dairy management techniques.

Dairy Investments Target Higher Farmer Incomes

Milk cooling infrastructure plays a key role in Kenya’s dairy sector by reducing spoilage, preserving milk quality and allowing farmers to aggregate larger volumes before sale.

Improved milk handling also enables cooperatives to access formal markets and negotiate better prices, increasing returns to dairy producers.

The event was attended by Presidential Senior Advisor Moses Kuria, Trade Principal Secretary Patrick Kilemi, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru and other national and county leaders.

The government says it will continue investing in dairy infrastructure and farmer support programmes to strengthen Kenya’s dairy industry and improve livelihoods for smallholder farmers.
