Baringo Groundnut Enterprise Gets Boost Through New Development Plan
Baringo Groundnut Enterprise gets a major boost as Baringo County, KALRO and CIMMYT agree on a plan to improve seed access, markets, value addition and farmer incomes.

The Baringo groundnut enterprise is set for growth after key agriculture stakeholders agreed to work together on a plan to strengthen the crop’s value chain across the county.
The agreement was reached during a stakeholder consultative meeting held on July 6, 2026, at Rift Hills Hotel in Kabarnet. The meeting brought together officials from the Baringo County Government, KALRO, CIMMYT and other agribusiness partners.
The Baringo County Government delegation was led by Governor Eng. Felix Kipng’ok Maiyo. KALRO was represented by Charles Bett, while CIMMYT was represented by Paswel Marenya.
The meeting focused on ways to turn groundnut farming into a profitable and sustainable business that can improve farmer incomes, create jobs and strengthen food security in Baringo County.
Participants discussed several areas that need support to help farmers earn more from groundnuts. These included improving access to certified seed, promoting commercial production, strengthening farmer aggregation, expanding market access and encouraging value addition.
The stakeholders also reviewed a proposed Groundnut Enterprise Development Accelerator. The programme aims to support farmers, youth and women-led businesses, aggregators and small and medium-sized enterprises through coordinated support and business development.
According to the discussions, the accelerator will help build stronger links between producers, processors and markets while making the sector more attractive to investors.
The meeting ended with a commitment to prepare a joint funding proposal and form a technical team that will oversee the implementation of the project.
If successfully implemented, the initiative is expected to strengthen the groundnut value chain, attract new agribusiness investments and create more economic opportunities for farmers in Baringo County.
