KEPHIS has been recognised as the Best Agricultural based Statutory Board Stand at the Nakuru National Show, a testament to the institution’s commitment to protecting Kenya’s agriculture through seed certification, phytosanitary services, and laboratory testing.

The award-winning stand has continued to attract hundreds of visitors, including H.E. David Kones, Deputy Governor of Nakuru County; Mr. Rashid Kwanya, Deputy County Commissioner, Nakuru West Sub-County; and KEPHIS Managing Director, Prof. Theophilus M. Mutui.

Throughout the exhibition, KEPHIS has demonstrated its role as the first line of defence for Kenya’s agriculture. The institution showcased its seed certification services, phytosanitary services, and ISO-accredited laboratory services that support food safety, quality agricultural inputs and safe trade. These services include soil testing for fertility evaluation and Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) testing.

One of the most engaging discussions at the stand centred on KEPHIS’ laboratory capacity to test for heavy metals in fish. The institution was urged to collaborate with other relevant government institutions in carrying out surveillance and testing of fish from Lake Nakuru and Naivasha to assess contamination levels and provide data.

Speaking during the official opening of the show, Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development, H.E. Mutahi Kagwe, said agriculture today is not only about production, but about innovation, technology and jobs. Above all, he said, it is about creating wealth for millions of Kenyans.

“We endeavour to make agriculture a profitable business for a food-secure and prosperous Kenya,” he stated.

In the same spirit, the Agriculture PS Dr. Paul Kipronoh Ronoh encouraged farmers to undertake soil testing to understand the condition of their soils before applying fertilizer. This ensures they use the right fertilizer based on their soil’s specific nutrient requirements.
