Modern Coffee Processing in Nyeri Gets a Boost as Karogoto Factory Installs Eco-Pulper Machine
- Coffee processing in Nyeri gets a boost with a modern Eco-Pulper Machine at Karogoto Coffee Factory, aimed at reducing water use, improving quality and supporting farmers’ incomes.
Modern Eco-Pulper Machine Installed at Karogoto Coffee Factory to Improve Coffee Processing in Nyeri
Coffee processing in Nyeri is set for improvement following the commissioning of a modern Eco-Pulper Machine at Karogoto Coffee Factory in Kirimukuyu Ward. The equipment is expected to improve wet-milling efficiency, reduce water consumption and help farmers deliver better-quality parchment coffee to the market.
The factory operates under New Tekangu Farmers’ Cooperative Society. The machine was acquired through a partnership between the County Government of Nyeri and the World Bank under the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP).
The investment targets some of the challenges facing coffee factories, including processing costs, water use and the need to maintain coffee quality after harvesting. By improving how freshly harvested coffee cherries are processed, the new equipment could help strengthen the factory’s operations and support better returns for farmers.
How the Eco-Pulper Machine Will Benefit Coffee Farmers
An Eco-Pulper Machine removes the outer skin and pulp from harvested coffee cherries during wet processing. Depending on its design and operating system, the equipment can use significantly less water than conventional pulping systems.
Lower water consumption can help reduce pressure on water resources, particularly in areas where factories face seasonal shortages. Efficient pulping can also help factories process harvested cherries promptly, reducing delays that may compromise quality.
For coffee farmers, the benefits depend on more than the machine itself. Proper maintenance, correct operation, timely delivery of ripe cherries and good fermentation, washing, drying and storage practices remain important in determining the final quality of parchment coffee.
The investment is intended to improve processing efficiency, lower operational costs and strengthen the potential for better market returns. However, the actual gains in quality, costs and farmer payments will depend on how effectively the factory operates the equipment and how the resulting savings are managed.
NAVCDP Supports Coffee Value Addition in Nyeri
The commissioning formed part of wider agricultural support under NAVCDP, a programme designed to increase farmers’ participation in markets and promote value addition across selected agricultural value chains.
The programme targets five priority value chains: coffee, dairy, avocado, Irish potatoes and bananas. In Nyeri County, it covers all 30 wards and supports efforts to improve agricultural productivity, market access and farmers’ participation in organised value chains.
During the event, New Tekangu Farmers’ Cooperative Society received an NAVCDP Inclusion Grant cheque worth KSh 220,000, while Rutuma Farmers’ Cooperative Society received KSh 160,000. The grants are intended to support agricultural value chain activities.
The support to the two cooperatives complements the investment in coffee-processing infrastructure by providing additional resources for farmer-focused activities. The precise use of the grants will depend on the activities undertaken by each cooperative.
Why Modern Processing Equipment Matters
Coffee quality is influenced by decisions made throughout production and processing, from harvesting and cherry selection to pulping, fermentation, drying and storage. Equipment that allows factories to handle cherries efficiently can help reduce bottlenecks during peak harvesting periods.
For cooperative societies, processing efficiency also affects operating expenses and the resources available to support farmers. Lower water and operational costs could improve factory performance, although the extent of any savings will need to be assessed against maintenance, energy and other operating expenses.
Better processing alone does not guarantee higher prices. Farmers’ final earnings also depend on coffee quality, prevailing market prices, marketing arrangements, factory management and how proceeds are distributed after expenses and deductions.
The Eco-Pulper investment therefore represents one part of a broader effort to strengthen the coffee value chain. Its impact will be greatest when supported by sound factory management, good agronomic practices, reliable market access and transparent cooperative operations.
Nyeri County Expands Support for Agricultural Value Addition
The County Government of Nyeri says it remains committed to investing in modern agricultural technologies, strengthening farmer cooperatives and supporting value addition.
The commissioning was attended by Nyeri Deputy Governor David Kinaniri, Kirimukuyu Ward MCA Antony Ndagita, Acting Agriculture CECM Dr Lucy Kiogora and other county officials, including CECMs responsible for Medical Services, Public Service, Education and Gender, as well as chief officers led by Patricia Wangui.
The investment at Karogoto Coffee Factory reflects efforts to improve the infrastructure available to coffee farmers while supporting wider agricultural development across Nyeri County.
For farmers affiliated with New Tekangu Farmers’ Cooperative Society, the key measure of success will be whether the new equipment helps the factory process cherries efficiently, maintain consistent quality and manage costs in ways that contribute to better returns.
As Kenya’s coffee sector continues to pursue stronger quality and market performance, investments in processing technology will need to be matched with effective cooperative management and greater transparency so that the benefits reach the farmers who produce the crop.
