Makueni County Eyes US Market for Organic Mango Farmers in New Export Push
- Makueni County is partnering with EPZA to link organic mango farmers to US export markets, encouraging farmers to transition to organic production and meet certification standards.

The County Government of Makueni is seeking new market opportunities for farmers engaged in organic mango production, with efforts underway to link them to markets in the United States.
County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Irrigation, Livestock, Fisheries and Cooperative Development, Japheth Mang’oka, said the County is engaging the Export Processing Zones Authority (EPZA) to map farmers already practising organic farming and establish a structured system that brings farmers, processors and offtakers together.
The discussions also aim to encourage more farmers to transition from conventional to organic mango production while ensuring compliance with the required organic management standards and certification requirements.
EPZA, led by General Manager for Operations and Investor Support Alice Atogo, has identified Freeze Dry as a potential offtaker. The company is willing to support farmers in meeting the requirements for organic certification, opening the way for Makueni’s organic mangoes to access higher-value export markets.

The partnership between Makueni County and EPZA is focused on identifying farmers who are already engaged in organic mango production and creating a structured system that connects them with processors and buyers.
Mang’oka said the County is committed to supporting farmers through the transition from conventional to organic farming, ensuring they meet the necessary organic management standards and certification requirements.
The initiative is expected to encourage more farmers to adopt organic practices, which offer higher returns in premium export markets compared to conventional mango production.
Freeze Dry Identified as Potential Offtaker for US Market
EPZA’s General Manager for Operations and Investor Support, Alice Atogo, identified Freeze Dry as a potential offtaker willing to support farmers in meeting organic certification requirements.
The company’s involvement is expected to open doors for Makueni’s organic mangoes to access higher-value export markets, particularly in the United States.
The collaboration between the County Government, EPZA and private sector players like Freeze Dry represents a coordinated effort to strengthen the organic mango value chain in Makueni and position the County as a key player in Kenya’s organic export sector.
