Kenya Explores Saudi Arabia’s Coffee Model as KALRO Seeks to Boost Research and Production
Kenya Saudi Arabia coffee cooperation is expanding as KALRO explores Saudi Arabia’s coffee model to strengthen research, certified seed systems and coffee production in Kenya.

The Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization’s Coffee Research Institute (KALRO-CRI) is exploring lessons from Saudi Arabia’s growing coffee industry to strengthen coffee research, production and innovation in Kenya.
The discussions took place during a knowledge-sharing seminar that brought together researchers and technical staff to examine opportunities for collaboration between the two countries. The meeting focused on coffee production, certified seed systems, technology transfer and sustainable value chain development.
The seminar was facilitated by Senior Research Scientist Hudson Lubabali, who shared experiences from the Sustainable Rural Agriculture Development Program in Saudi Arabia.
Lubabali said Saudi Arabia’s coffee sector offers valuable lessons that Kenya can adopt to improve productivity, strengthen research and promote sustainable coffee farming.
He highlighted opportunities for cooperation in knowledge exchange, capacity building, farm mechanization and advanced plant tissue culture technologies for producing certified coffee planting materials.
Lubabali also called for greater efforts to promote local coffee consumption, saying a stronger domestic market would support coffee tourism, increase demand for Kenyan coffee and create more opportunities for farmers.
He added that Kenya’s long-standing expertise in coffee research, innovation and technology transfer places the country in a strong position to expand international partnerships while accelerating the adoption of improved coffee technologies.
Speaking during the seminar, KALRO-CRI Director Dr. Zachary Kinyua said international knowledge exchange plays an important role in improving Kenya’s coffee sector.
He noted that learning from other coffee-producing countries enables researchers to compare production systems, identify practical solutions and adapt successful approaches to local conditions.
According to Dr. Kinyua, the knowledge gained from the seminar will help strengthen coffee research, improve technology dissemination, increase farm productivity and enhance the competitiveness of Kenya’s coffee industry.
He said adopting proven innovations and strengthening collaboration with international partners will be important as Kenya works to increase coffee production and improve returns for growers.
The seminar forms part of KALRO-CRI’s broader efforts to support a more productive, competitive and sustainable coffee sector through research, innovation and partnerships.
