Kenya and Senegal have taken a step toward stronger regulation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) following a consultative meeting between their national biosafety authorities.

The meeting brought together officials from Kenya’s National Biosafety Authority (NBA) and Senegal’s National Biosafety Authority to explore closer cooperation in biosafety regulation and the safe use of modern biotechnology.

Speaking during the meeting, Kenya’s National Biosafety Authority Acting Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Ann Karimi, welcomed the Senegalese delegation and said the visit offered an opportunity to share Kenya’s experience in building and implementing a national biosafety regulatory system.

Dr. Karimi said the discussions come at a time when many African countries are adopting modern biotechnology to improve food security, respond to climate change, control crop pests and diseases, protect the environment and support sustainable agricultural development.

She noted that African countries have a shared responsibility to ensure biotechnology is developed, transferred, handled and used safely in line with national laws and international agreements.

Senegal’s National Biosafety Authority Director General, Prof. Aliou Ndiaye, said advances in modern and emerging biotechnology continue to reshape agriculture, health and environmental management across the world.

He urged African countries to embrace these technologies to unlock new opportunities while maintaining strong biosafety standards.

Prof. Ndiaye also emphasized the need for continued cooperation and capacity building between the two biosafety authorities. He said stronger technical partnerships will help both countries maximize the benefits of modern biotechnology while ensuring effective regulation of genetically modified organisms.

The consultative meeting is expected to strengthen collaboration between Kenya and Senegal and support the development of safe, science-based biosafety systems that promote agricultural innovation across Africa.
