Kenya School of Agriculture Makueni Campus Construction Begins With KSh90 Million Investment

MAKUENI, Kenya โ€“ Construction of the Kenya School of Agriculture Makueni campus has officially begun following the groundbreaking of a KSh90 million project expected to strengthen agricultural training, research and technology transfer in Lower Eastern Kenya.

The new campus, located at Kwakathoka in Makueni County, will become the 10th branch of the Kenya School of Agriculture (KSA). The first phase is expected to be completed and operational by November.

County and national government leaders said the institution will provide practical agricultural training for farmers, youth and extension officers while supporting innovation and modern farming technologies to improve productivity.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. described the project as a major investment in the county’s agricultural future.

He said the campus will serve as a centre for agricultural research, innovation and skills development, helping farmers adopt modern production technologies to respond to climate change, improve productivity and meet changing market demands.

According to the governor, the institution is also expected to stimulate the local economy by creating employment opportunities during construction and after completion while attracting new investments into the county’s agricultural sector.

Mutula called on the contractor to prioritize local workers and source construction materials from local suppliers to ensure residents benefit directly from the project.

Principal Secretary for Agriculture Dr. Paul Kipronoh Ronoh said the project became possible through close collaboration between the national and county governments after sustained lobbying by Makueni County.

He commended the county administration for prioritizing agricultural development, saying partnerships between the two levels of government remain critical in expanding agricultural education and improving food production.

Ronoh noted that agriculture remains one of Kenya’s key economic sectors and urged young people to view farming as a profitable business rather than a last resort.

He encouraged students who will enroll at the institution to take advantage of opportunities available through the Kenya School of Agriculture, including an existing partnership with the United Kingdom that offers paid agricultural internship programmes for learners.

Once operational, the campus is expected to increase access to agricultural training for counties in the Lower Eastern region, reducing the need for students and farmers to travel long distances for specialized education.

Leaders said the institution will support the government’s efforts to produce a skilled agricultural workforce capable of driving innovation, improving farm productivity and strengthening food security.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Acting County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Irrigation, Livestock, Fisheries and Cooperative Development Damaris Kavoi, County Executive Committee Member for ICT, Education and Internship Japheth Musyoka Mang’oka, Muvau/Kikumini MCA Elizabeth Kawembe Mutinda, Thange MCA Erick Musyoki Katumo and other county and national government officials.
