Kenya and Lesotho have agreed to strengthen agricultural cooperation through knowledge sharing, research, climate-smart agriculture, seed systems and livestock development to improve food and nutrition security.

Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Sen. Mutahi Kagwe and Lesotho’s Minister for Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, Hon. Selibe Mochoboroane, hold bilateral talks aimed at strengthening agricultural cooperation through research, innovation and climate-smart farming.

Kenya and Lesotho have taken a significant step toward strengthening agricultural cooperation following bilateral talks between Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Sen. Mutahi Kagwe and Lesotho’s Minister for Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, Hon. Selibe Mochoboroane.

The discussions focused on expanding collaboration between the two countries through knowledge sharing, innovation and institutional partnerships aimed at accelerating agricultural transformation and improving food and nutrition security.

During the meeting, the two ministers explored opportunities for cooperation in several priority areas, including seed systems, horticulture, livestock development, climate-smart agriculture, agricultural research and innovation.

The leaders emphasized the importance of sharing expertise and adopting modern agricultural technologies to strengthen productivity, improve resilience to climate change and support sustainable farming systems.

According to the two ministers, stronger partnerships between Kenya and Lesotho will enable both countries to exchange technical knowledge, promote innovation and develop practical solutions to common agricultural challenges.

A key outcome of the bilateral meeting was the commitment to fast-track the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will formally establish a framework for agricultural cooperation between the two nations.

Once signed, the agreement is expected to enhance technical collaboration, facilitate the exchange of agricultural expertise and best practices, and strengthen long-term partnerships between research institutions, government agencies and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector.

The proposed partnership is also expected to create opportunities for joint research initiatives, technology transfer and capacity building while supporting the development of resilient and sustainable food production systems.

Kenya has continued to strengthen regional and international partnerships as part of its broader strategy to modernize agriculture, improve food security and expand agricultural trade. Through collaboration with other countries, the Government aims to promote innovation, strengthen agricultural value chains and increase the adoption of climate-smart farming technologies.

The discussions with Lesotho reflect the growing recognition that international cooperation plays an important role in addressing challenges such as climate change, food insecurity, declining agricultural productivity and the need for sustainable resource management.

Officials from both countries expressed confidence that the planned partnership will strengthen agricultural institutions, improve access to research and innovation, and contribute to increased food production and better livelihoods for farmers.

The proposed collaboration is expected to support long-term agricultural development by encouraging the exchange of scientific knowledge, promoting innovation and building stronger institutional relationships between Kenya and Lesotho.

As both countries continue to prioritize agricultural transformation, the planned agreement is expected to lay the foundation for closer cooperation in developing resilient food systems capable of meeting future food and nutrition demands.
