Kenya Poultry Farmers Call for Protection as Foreign Competition Raises Pressure on Local Producers
Kenya poultry farmers are calling for government protection, saying rising foreign competition, high feed costs and limited access to affordable credit are putting local producers under growing pressure.

sociation says the entry of industrial-scale layer and broiler farms established by Chinese-owned investors is increasing competition in Kenya’s poultry sector at a time when local producers are already struggling with high production costs, limited financing and inadequate government support.
PFAK argues that unless policies are introduced to create a level playing field, many small and medium-scale poultry farmers could be pushed out of business.
Farmers Call for Fair Competition
Speaking on behalf of poultry farmers in Kajiado County, PFAK representative Susan Mwangi said Kenyan farmers welcome investment in the agricultural sector but want policies that ensure competition remains fair for local producers.
“Kenyan poultry farmers are not opposed to investment or international partnerships. However, competition must be fair. Local farmers cannot compete against investors who have access to substantial capital, advanced technologies and extensive financial backing that most Kenyan producers simply do not have,” Mwangi said.
She noted that many Kenyan poultry farmers continue to rely on limited financial resources while facing rising production costs, making it difficult to compete with well-capitalized commercial operations.
Rising Costs Continue to Challenge Poultry Farmers
According to the association, poultry farmers continue to face several challenges beyond increased competition.
These include high feed prices, limited access to affordable credit, inadequate production technology and inconsistent policy support.
The association says these constraints have increased production costs for local farmers while reducing their competitiveness in both egg and chicken markets.
Industry players argue that improving access to financing and modern production technologies would help local farmers increase efficiency and compete more effectively.
Poultry Industry Supports Thousands of Livelihoods
PFAK said the poultry industry plays an important role in Kenya’s economy by providing employment and income for hundreds of thousands of households.
The sector supports smallholder farmers, commercial producers, women and youth while creating business opportunities in feed manufacturing, hatcheries, veterinary services, transport and agricultural trade.
The association warned that weakening local poultry production could have wider economic consequences for the entire value chain.
It also expressed concern that increased dependence on foreign-controlled production could affect Kenya’s long-term food security if local producers continue to lose market share.
Association Wants Policy Reforms
The association is urging both the national and county governments to introduce legislation that protects local poultry farmers from unfair market practices while encouraging investments that complement rather than replace domestic production.
Among the proposals presented by PFAK are investment guidelines that promote partnerships with local farmers, improved access to affordable agricultural credit and stronger government support for poultry production.
The association said such measures would help strengthen Kenya’s poultry industry, improve farmer competitiveness and safeguard local investments while ensuring the sector continues contributing to employment, food security and economic growth.
