KALRO Improved Chicken Delivers Eggs, Nutrition and Income to 2,000 Dadaab Households
- KALRO and FAO Kenya have supplied improved chicken to 2,000 households and 19 farmer field schools in Dadaab Refugee Complex, boosting egg production, nutrition and livelihoods with EU support.

Agriculture is central to Kenya’s nutrition and food security. Through a partnership with FAO Kenya, KALRO has supplied improved chicken from its Non-Ruminant Research Centre, Naivasha, to 2,000 households and 19 farmer field schools in the Dadaab Refugee Complex.
The initiative, supported by the European Union, provides two-month-old KALRO improved chicken to promote household egg production, improve access to nutritious food and create livelihood opportunities.
Through the distribution of improved chicken and support for small-scale egg production, the initiative strengthens access to nutritious animal-source foods while promoting good poultry management practices, helping households produce food that is safe for consumption and supporting healthier communities across Kenya.
With some birds already laying, the initiative demonstrates the adaptability and productivity of KALRO improved chicken across different agro-ecological zones and low-input settings.
KALRO and FAO Kenya Partner to Boost Household Egg Production in Dadaab
The partnership between KALRO and FAO Kenya is focused on promoting household egg production among vulnerable communities in the Dadaab Refugee Complex.
By supplying two-month-old improved chicken from KALRO’s Non-Ruminant Research Centre in Naivasha, the initiative aims to improve access to nutritious animal-source foods for 2,000 households and 19 farmer field schools.
The distribution of improved chicken is accompanied by support for small-scale egg production and training on good poultry management practices, helping households produce food that is safe for consumption while building healthier communities.
The initiative is supported by the European Union as part of broader efforts to strengthen nutrition and food security in Kenya.
