Small scale farmers in Laikipia set to benefit from 11million irrigation project

Small scale horticulture farmers in Laikipia County are set to receive a boost following the launch of water saving irrigation technology system by the County Government.

The project, which has been allocated Ksh 11 million, will be used to expand water pans and avoid siltation of dams during this short rain season so as to preserve water for the dry season.

Speaking to Citizen TV, Laikipa County Executive Committee (CEC) member in charge of agriculture and livestock, Jane Putunoi said that the initiative also aimed at boosting irrigation in various areas where farmers practice horticultural farming adding that there is need to support farmers in every possible way.

“Laikipia County is bestowed with good and favorable climatic conditions for both livestock and farming and we will support our farmers by all means,” said Putunoi.

Putunoi has also hinted that the county government has started distributing irrigation kits and dam liners to farmers in order to ensure they do not experience water shortage in their farming activities that currently depend on furrow and basin irrigation systems that use more water.

The climate smart agriculture practices are expected to enhance community’s adaptation strategies and resilience to effects of climate change and sustainable management of scarce natural resources, consequently boosting food security and increasing income levels at household levels.
