AI, Smart Farming and Innovation Reshape the Future of Agriculture in Kenya
Agriculture is entering a new phase in Kenya as farmers increasingly turn to artificial intelligence, mechanisation, precision farming and other technologies to improve productivity, reduce costs and compete in domestic and international markets.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Sen. Mutahi Kagwe highlighted the growing role of technology in farming during a tour of innovative farms in Trans Nzoia County, where he engaged farmers and examined emerging production models.
The visit took the CS to Hydroponic Farm, Mt. Elgon Orchards, Lokitela Farm and Sirwo Farm, showcasing different approaches to modern agriculture, including hydroponic production, avocado seedling grafting, greenhouse farming, automated irrigation, mechanisation, value addition and export-oriented production.
The farms demonstrated how technology and modern management practices can help farmers produce more efficiently while improving the quality of agricultural products.
AI and drones reshape farming
Artificial intelligence and AI-powered drones were among the technologies highlighted during the tour.
The emerging technologies are increasingly being used to improve crop monitoring, identify production problems and support more precise farm management.
Drones can help farmers monitor large areas of farmland, identify crop stress and assess field conditions, while data-driven systems can assist farmers in making decisions on irrigation, crop protection and other farm operations.
For Kenya’s farmers, the adoption of such technologies could become increasingly important as production costs rise and weather patterns become less predictable.
The Government is therefore looking to strengthen innovation as part of efforts to transform agriculture from traditional production into a more technology-driven and commercially competitive sector.
Modern farming technologies increase productivity
The farms visited by Kagwe also demonstrated several technologies already being applied in commercial agriculture.
Hydroponic farming allows crops to be grown without conventional soil, with nutrients supplied through water. The system can improve control over growing conditions and make productive use of limited space and water when properly designed and managed.
Other farms have adopted greenhouse technology, automated irrigation systems and modern post-harvest handling practices to improve production and reduce losses.
At Mt. Elgon Orchards, avocado seedling grafting highlighted the importance of quality planting material in developing productive orchards.
Quality seedlings, proper orchard management and access to reliable markets remain critical factors in determining the commercial success of fruit farming.
Technology creates opportunities beyond the farm
Kagwe said the transformation of agriculture is not limited to increasing crop yields.
Modern agriculture creates employment and business opportunities across a much wider value chain, including farm operations, machinery services, processing, packaging, transportation, logistics and export.
The expansion of technology-based agriculture could also create opportunities for young people with skills in engineering, information technology, data analysis, drone operations and agronomy.
This could help agriculture attract a new generation of entrepreneurs and professionals while creating additional sources of employment in rural areas.
Government and private sector urged to work together
The CS stressed the importance of partnerships between the Government and private sector in accelerating agricultural innovation and attracting investment.
He said farmers need an environment in which innovation, financing, technology, markets and infrastructure work together to improve the profitability of farming.
The Government’s role, he said, includes supporting farmers while creating opportunities for businesses and investors to participate in agricultural development.
The approach is particularly important as Kenya seeks to move beyond the production of raw agricultural commodities towards value-added products that can compete in regional and international markets.
Marketing and branding key to agricultural exports
The Trans Nzoia tour also placed emphasis on marketing and branding.
Producing high-quality agricultural commodities alone does not guarantee success in export markets. Farmers, processors and exporters must also develop strong brands and meet the quality, packaging and market requirements of international buyers.
Kagwe said Kenya must deliberately build the image of its agricultural products in international markets while expanding opportunities for farmers and processors.
The strategy could help Kenyan producers capture greater value from products such as fruits, vegetables and processed agricultural commodities rather than relying mainly on raw commodity exports.
Air transport critical to Kenya’s export ambitions
The CS also highlighted the role of aviation in supporting agricultural exports.
Fresh agricultural products often require rapid transportation to international markets because of their perishable nature. Reliable air cargo therefore remains an important component of Kenya’s horticulture and fresh produce export chain.
Kagwe noted the strategic role of Kenya Airways and other airlines in connecting Kenyan agricultural producers with overseas markets.
The Chairperson of Kenya Airways, who also participates in farming, was among those present during the engagement, underscoring the potential for stronger links between agriculture and the aviation industry.
Kenya’s agriculture enters a technology-driven era
The Trans Nzoia farm tour offered a glimpse into how Kenyan agriculture could evolve in the coming years.
From AI-powered drones and automated irrigation to hydroponics, greenhouse production, mechanisation, improved seedlings and modern post-harvest systems, farmers are increasingly adopting technologies designed to improve efficiency and productivity.
However, technology alone will not transform agriculture.
Farmers also require access to affordable finance, reliable markets, quality inputs, extension services, infrastructure and appropriate skills.
The Government’s challenge will therefore be to create an environment in which these elements work together.
For farmers, the message from Trans Nzoia is increasingly clear: the future of Kenyan agriculture will not depend only on how much land a farmer owns, but increasingly on how efficiently that land, technology, data and markets are managed.
As Kenya seeks to expand agricultural exports and create more jobs across the value chain, AI, smart farming and agricultural innovation could become some of the most important tools in the country’s next phase of agricultural transformation.
