Value addition:ย Farmers can add value to their bananas by processing them into crisps, flour, and other products. Avigwili Banana Processors in Vihiga County, a group of 36 members, has been adding value to tissue culture bananas since 2023. They produce banana crisps, with a 50g packet selling at Sh50 and a 100g pack going for double that amount. Through value-addition, the group was assured of increased shelf-life of its products and reduction of post-harvest losses, which account for 25 to 50 per cent of production for most farmers.
Export markets: South Korea has given Kenya’s produce a clean bill of health allowing farmers to export bananas and broccoli to the country. South Korea imports 70 percent of its food and in 2017, bananas were the most imported product in the country recording 834,000 tonnes, worth $1.24 billion . Meru farmers under Imenti Community Based Organization won a contract to export banana flour and pancake to Hungary, an indication that the produce has potential international markets .
Production Statistics
Kenya produces an estimated 1.4m tonnes of bananas annually . The Leading producers are: Meru (19 per cent), Embu (12 per cent), Taita Taveta (nine per cent), Murang’a (seven per cent), Kisii (six per cent), Tharaka Nithi (six per cent) and Bungoma (five per cent). 86 per cent of the total bananas produced are sold commercially with the rest being consumed directly according to USAID.
