The Effect of High Temperature on Tilapia Farming in Kenya
High temperatures can harm tilapia farming in Kenya by reducing growth, increasing mortality, and causing reproductive issues. Learn how to manage heat stress in fish ponds.

Tilapia aquaculture is one of the most extensive aquaculture ventures in Kenya. It’s preferred since it has fairly low input requirements, fast growth, and is tolerant to different environments. But like in any agricultural system, there are issues with fish productionโand one of the biggest is temperature.
While tilapia are warm-water fish, there is only a limited amount of heat they can stand. Just because they prefer warm ponds doesn’t mean too much heat is better. Far from it: too many temperatures actually harm their health, retard their growth, and can lead to bulk death if not restrained.
Let us consider what high temperatures do to tilapia.
Slower Growth and Poor Feed Efficiency
When water temperatures rise above the ideal temperature range (27โ32ยฐC), tilapia begin to deteriorate. Their feed conversion is poor. They take in more but gain less weight. Farmers eventually spend more feed without seeing good growth. When temperatures are consistently high for weeks or days, the fish enter a drowsy state and stop feeding completely.
Increased Risk of Death
Over 35ยฐC, it becomes hazardous. At 37โ38ยฐC, tilapia start to kill themselvesโespecially when water contains low levels of oxygen. The Kenyan farmers from dry and semi-dry areas with shallow or unlined ponds are most vulnerable under hot conditions.
Stress and Disease Outbreaks
Heat stress depresses the fish’s immune system. Stressed tilapia is more vulnerable to disease like Streptococcus and Aeromonas infection that will kill the whole inventory within a few days if left unchecked. In most cases, the signs are late when already it is too late to take action realistically.
Hormonal and Reproductive Problems
Research shows that tilapia exposed to high temperatures during early life stages can develop skewed sex ratios, often leaning heavily towards males. While this may seem like a benefit for some growers targeting male-only cultures, it becomes a problem when youโre relying on natural breeding systems.
In adult fish, prolonged exposure to heat can interfere with hormone balance, hinder the proper development of ovaries, and decrease fertility. That means less eggs, fewer hatchlings, and poorer fingerlings.
Blood and Cell Abnormalities
Heat stress also has an impact on internal workings. Hemoglobin levels will be depleted, reducing oxygen supply in the fish. White blood cell counts will increaseโa signal of stress or infection. Red cells can also become malformed and weaken the fish further.
These may not be visible to superficial observation but lead to overall poor performance.
What’s the Optimal Temperature Range?
Tilapia thrive from 27ยฐC up to 32ยฐC, with 28ยฐC being the best for growth. A couple of degrees higher or lower from that range for a brief period is perfectly fine. But extended exposure to 33ยฐC and above is stressful to the fish.
Practical Advice for Kenyan Farmers
If you raise tilapia in dry counties like Machakos, Kitui, Baringo, or any other dry counties, water temperature control would be your priority. Here’s what you can do:
- Shade ponds with nets, crops, or man-made shelters.
- Deep ponds so that there are no sharp changes in temperature.
- Avoid feeding at midday when the sun is very hot. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to feed.
- Have proper water circulation and aeration.
- When using tanks or cages, monitor the water temperatures daily.
Warm-water fish, yes, tilapia areโbut there’s a limit. Rising temperatures in Kenya, especially in the dry season, make it more important than ever to understand and manage the heat element. To ignore it could cost you growth, health, and profits.
