The latest generation of farmers is transforming small spaces into productive farms using buckets, plastic containers, sacks, and even water-based systems—completely bypassing the need for soil. This rapidly spreading technology, especially prominent in Nairobi and Central Kenya, is changing the face of urban farming.

In areas like Mukuru kwa Njenga, an informal settlement in Nairobi, residents have embraced farming by filling buckets, sacks, and any available containers with soil and manure to cultivate crops. These efforts are part of a larger movement to combat hunger and enhance food security—a critical concern for farmers, particularly in light of the challenges posed by climate change. Unpredictable seasonal rains, often followed by excessive flooding, have made traditional farming methods less reliable, prompting the adoption of new technologies.

One such method gaining popularity is hydroponic farming, a soil-free agricultural technique where plants are grown in nutrient-rich water. This approach has been embraced by hundreds of farmers across Kenya, with livestock keepers using it to grow fodder for poultry, pigs, and cattle, while others cultivate vegetables like tomatoes, kale, and broccoli.

Hydroponic technology relies on water enriched with a precise mix of mineral nutrients, providing plants with the essential elements needed for growth. By eliminating soil, this method avoids soil-borne diseases that often devastate crops and significantly reduces water wastage. In traditional farming, much of the water is lost as it either gets absorbed by the soil or seeps into the water table, leaving only a small fraction available for plant uptake.

Moreover, growing crops without soil accelerates plant growth and helps retain nutrients that would otherwise be lost in soil-based farming. The hydroponic system reduces the need for fertilizers as plants absorb nutrients directly from the water, leading to faster growth and earlier maturity. To set up a hydroponic system, farmers need a greenhouse or shed made from a special green material available locally, aluminum or plastic trays and containers, clean water, mineral solutions, and seeds.

The shed, constructed from a unique material, helps maintain optimal temperatures between 17-25°C, crucial for hydroponic crops. It also reduces excessive evaporation, a common issue in traditional farming. Farmers must invest in aluminum or plastic trays for fodder and containers for crops like tomatoes, onions, and strawberries, ensuring that the trays are treated to prevent mold growth. The number of trays required depends on the scale of farming.

While hydroponic farming offers numerous advantages, including fast crop growth and high yields, it also presents challenges. The recycling of nutrient solutions increases the risk of spreading diseases, and even a small mistake can lead to significant losses. Although soil-borne diseases are eliminated, the system is susceptible to waterborne diseases. Additionally, the initial cost of setting up a hydroponic farm can be a barrier for many farmers, and the system requires careful monitoring and maintenance.

Hydroponic farming, which has been practiced for centuries in countries like Australia, is still relatively new in Africa. Whether it will replace traditional soil-based methods in urban areas, including slums where crops like cabbages, kale, and onions are grown in sacks and trenches, remains to be seen.
