Mango farmers in Murang’a County have been directed to temporarily stop harvesting their fruits unless they receive clearance from the Lower Murang’a Cooperative. The directive follows a serious oversupply in the market, which has disrupted normal collection by processors and manufacturers.

Murang’a County Halts Mango Harvesting After Market Oversupply

The Murang’a County Government said the unusually high supply has made it difficult for buyers to absorb all the mangoes being harvested. As a result, many fruits risk going to waste if harvesting continues without coordination.

Governor Irungu Kang’ata explained that the situation was caused by favorable weather conditions last year. He noted that heavy rains in August, followed by reduced rainfall in October, created ideal conditions for mango trees to flower and set fruit heavily. This led to a bumper harvest across the county, pushing supply far beyond normal market demand.

The governor also issued a strong warning against harvesting unripe mangoes. He said most manufacturers have rejected immature fruits because they affect processing quality. Farmers who pick mangoes too early risk losses since buyers are refusing to take them.

To address the surplus and reduce post-harvest losses, the county government has partnered with Food for Education. Through this collaboration, excess mangoes will be incorporated into school feeding programs in Murang’a, Nairobi, and Kiambu counties.

The initiative seeks to reduce food waste, stabilize farmer incomes, and improve nutrition for schoolchildren. County officials said coordinated harvesting, quality control, and alternative markets are necessary to protect farmers from losses during peak production periods.

Farmers have been urged to work closely with cooperatives and county agricultural officers before harvesting, as authorities continue to manage the surplus and look for long-term solutions to mango market fluctuations.
