A Game-Changer for Smallholder Farmers

Funded by the Italian Government through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), CEFA, AVSI Foundation, and E4IMPACT, these initiatives have empowered 30,000 smallholder farmers across seven counties. By promoting best practices in coffee production and value addition, the ARABIKA Project has reinforced Kenya’s competitiveness in the international gourmet coffee scene.

As the ARABIKA Project concludes, it leaves behind a strong foundation for sustainable coffee production. Through targeted interventions in quality improvement, climate-smart practices, cooperative governance, digitization, and branding, the project has significantly strengthened Kenya’s coffee value chain.

Key Achievements of the ARABIKA Project

78 extension officers trained in climate-smart coffee production techniques.
151 young service providers equipped with specialized technical skills for the coffee sector.
53 factory technicians trained in sustainable processing methods and composting.

Launch of the Kenya Coffee Training Centre

The event also marked the soft launch of the Kenya Coffee Training Centre, a state-of-the-art facility designed to enhance skills, quality control, and market competitiveness in the coffee industry. This milestone is expected to revolutionize coffee education and value addition in the country.

Core Mandate of the Training Centre

The training centre, funded by the Italian Government and International Cooperation and implemented by UNIDO, will offer specialized training and research in:

Roasting & Grinding – Enhancing flavor profiles and maintaining quality.
Cupping & Quality Assessment – Sensory evaluation to meet specialty coffee standards.
Packaging & Branding – Value addition to improve market positioning.
Café & Brewing Lab – Practical training in coffee preparation and barista skills.
Conference & Training Facilities – A platform for industry discussions and knowledge sharing.

High-Level Attendance and Stakeholder Support

The event was attended by Hon. John Mutunga, Chairperson of the National Assembly Agricultural Standing Committee, alongside senior government officials, development partners, and industry stakeholders. Ms. Lorenzo Gambacorta, Chargée d’Affaires at the Embassy of Italy in Nairobi, reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to supporting Kenya’s coffee sector.
