Kenya is expanding its livestock training infrastructure as construction of the Awendo Livestock Training Institute progresses in Migori County, with the new facility expected to strengthen skills in animal production, animal health and other areas of livestock management.

Principal Secretary for Livestock Development Jonathan Mueke inspected the ongoing construction of the institute in Awendo alongside CS John Mbadi, local leaders and Hon. Walter Owino. The visit comes as the government continues to place greater emphasis on technical skills, technology and market-oriented production within the livestock sector.

The institute is being developed to provide training for farmers and young people seeking practical skills in livestock production. Its programmes will cover Animal Production and Animal Health, while additional short courses will focus on beekeeping, feed formulation and dairy production.

Training to Support Farmers and Livestock Businesses

The planned institute is expected to serve a wider purpose beyond classroom training. According to Mueke, the facility will also operate as a model farm and outreach centre, creating a base for demonstrating modern livestock practices and taking technical knowledge closer to farmers in Migori and neighbouring counties.

The approach reflects the growing demand for skilled workers and better farm-level knowledge as Kenya seeks to improve livestock productivity. Farmers need practical skills in areas such as animal nutrition, disease prevention, breeding, housing and general herd management if livestock production is to generate better returns.

Feed formulation will also form part of the short-course programme. Feed costs remain an important consideration for livestock farmers, particularly in dairy production, where nutrition directly affects animal health and milk output. Training farmers to understand feed ingredients and formulate suitable rations provides an opportunity to improve feeding decisions at farm level.

The inclusion of beekeeping and dairy production also broadens the range of livestock-related enterprises covered by the institute. Such training provides farmers and young people with skills applicable to different agricultural businesses rather than limiting training to conventional livestock production.

Awendo Institute to Serve as Regional Outreach Centre

The Awendo facility is expected to serve farmers beyond Migori County through its planned outreach activities and model farm. Demonstration-based training gives farmers an opportunity to see production practices in operation and assess how different techniques apply to their own farms.

The development also forms part of a wider government effort to strengthen Livestock Training Institutes across the country. The objective is to equip young people and farmers with skills suited to a livestock industry increasingly shaped by technology, productivity requirements and changing market demands.

For the livestock sector, technical training has implications across the value chain. Better-trained farmers and workers are better positioned to manage animals, reduce avoidable production losses and respond to market requirements. Stronger skills also support livestock businesses involved in feed production, animal health, dairy processing, beekeeping and other related activities.

Mueke said the investment in livestock training is intended to help create opportunities for young people while supporting farmers to improve productivity and participate more effectively in the livestock economy.

As construction of the Awendo Livestock Training Institute continues, its eventual impact will depend on the quality of training offered, links with farmers and industry, and the ability of graduates to apply their skills in commercial livestock enterprises.

For Migori and neighbouring counties, the institute offers a new centre for livestock education, demonstrations and farmer outreach, while contributing to Kenya’s wider effort to develop a more skilled livestock workforce.
