West Pokot Receives Solar-Powered Milk Coolers to Boost Dairy Farmers and Cut Losses
The government has delivered three solar-powered milk coolers to dairy cooperatives in West Pokot County. This brings the total number of coolers supplied in the county to 11. The investment is helping farmers reduce post-harvest losses, improve milk quality, and increase their incomes.

The delivery was made during a Women Economic Empowerment Programme in Kabichbich, West Pokot County. The event was attended by First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto, who joined farmers, women, youth groups, and local leaders. The coolers were handed over by Hon. Jonathan Mueke, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Livestock Development.
Speaking at the event, PS Mueke said the government is committed to supporting dairy farmers in the region. He noted that milk losses have been a major challenge for farmers in West Pokot. Without cooling facilities, milk spoils quickly, forcing farmers to sell at low prices or watch their produce go to waste.
The solar-powered milk coolers will change this. Farmers can now store their milk for longer periods. They can wait for better prices. They can also aggregate their milk and sell in bulk. This will lead to higher incomes and more stable livelihoods.
The solar-powered milk coolers in West Pokot are part of a larger government effort to modernise the dairy sector. The government has been rolling out cooling facilities across the country to reduce post-harvest losses and improve milk quality.

During the event, the team from the State Department for Livestock Development also trained farmers on vaccination, breed improvement, and the Quality-Based Milk Payment System. These trainings are designed to boost productivity and increase returns for farmers.
Farmers learned about the importance of vaccinating their animals against common diseases. They also learned about improving their herds through better breeding practices. The Quality-Based Milk Payment System rewards farmers who produce high-quality milk. This encourages farmers to improve their farming practices.
The solar-powered milk coolers in West Pokot are expected to benefit hundreds of dairy farmers in the county. The coolers are solar-powered, making them sustainable and cost-effective. They do not rely on expensive diesel or electricity, which is often unreliable in rural areas.
Also present during the event were CS Hannah Cheptumo of Gender, Arts and Heritage, Governor Simon Kachapin, MP David Pkosing, Woman Representative Lilian Tomitom, PS Joel Arumonyang of Public Works, JOYWO leadership, and other local leaders. Their presence highlighted the importance of the initiative and the government’s commitment to supporting farmers.
The solar-powered milk coolers in West Pokot are a model for other counties. Similar initiatives are being rolled out across the country. The goal is to transform the dairy sector and make it more profitable for farmers.
The government is also working on other interventions to support dairy farmers. These include improving access to veterinary services, providing subsidised feeds, and strengthening cooperatives. The solar-powered milk coolers are just one part of this broader strategy.
The delivery of the coolers was welcomed by farmers in West Pokot. They expressed gratitude to the government for the support. Many farmers had been struggling with milk losses for years. The coolers will make a significant difference in their lives.
The solar-powered milk coolers in West Pokot are a shining example of what can be achieved when government, private sector, and communities work together. The coolers will help farmers earn more, reduce waste, and improve the quality of milk in the market.
The work continues. More coolers will be delivered. More farmers will be trained. The dairy sector will grow stronger. The solar-powered milk coolers in West Pokot are just the beginning. The future of dairy farming in the county is bright. The farmers are ready. The government is committed. The transformation is underway.
