Cabbage farming has long been a key crop in South Kinangop’s. For many smallholder farmers, it’s not just a crop—it’s their main source of income. But in recent years, an invisible enemy has been quietly getting into their fields, causing devastating losses and confusion: Clubroot Disease.

Though it’s not new, many farmers are encountering it for the first time. The effects are alarming—stunted plants, wilting leaves, and ultimately, massive crop failures. But perhaps the most dangerous aspect of clubroot is that many farmers don’t recognize it. Instead, they mistakenly blame nematodes or nutrient deficiencies, spending money on treatments that never work.

So, what exactly is clubroot, and why is it causing so much trouble in Kinangop? Let’s break it down.

What is Clubroot Disease?

Clubroot is a soil-borne disease that targets plants in the Brassica family (also called cruciferous crops). This includes cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and even traditional vegetables like managu. It is caused by a microscopic organism called Plasmodiophora brassicae.

Unlike common plant diseases caused by fungi or bacteria, Plasmodiophora brassicae is a strange type of pathogen known as a plasmodiophorid—a soil-dwelling parasite that infects the roots of brassicas. Once it enters the plant, it hijacks the root cells, causing them to swell and form large, grotesque galls or tubers. These club-shaped galls are where the disease gets its name.

But the real problem starts when these swollen roots can no longer absorb water and nutrients effectively. The plant becomes stunted, wilts even when the soil has enough moisture, and often fails to develop marketable heads. In a place like Kinangop, where cabbage is grown on a large scale and in continuous cycles, the spread of this disease can devastate entire livelihoods.

The Silent Spread — Why Kinangop Farmers are at Risk

One of the main reasons clubroot is becoming a serious issue in Kinangop is misdiagnosis. Many farmers, agro-dealers, and even some extension officers mistake it for nematode damage. The symptoms look similar at first glance: stunted growth, wilting, and poor yields. However, while nematicides can control nematodes, they have zero effect on clubroot.

This leads farmers down a frustrating and expensive path. They invest in costly nematicides, hoping to save their crop, only to see no improvement. Worse still, as time passes, the disease builds up in the soil, making each successive crop more vulnerable.

The lack of awareness and training on soil-borne diseases is a critical gap that needs urgent attention.

The Harsh Reality: There’s No Chemical Cure

Unlike many other plant diseases, there’s no chemical fungicide that can cure clubroot once it infects a plant. Control focuses on prevention, suppression, and managing its spread. This makes clubroot a long-term challenge that requires a combination of good agronomic practices.

Effective Ways to Manage and Control Clubroot Disease

Here are the key strategies farmers in Kinangop—and anywhere else battling clubroot—should adopt:

1. Soil Liming to Raise pH Levels

Clubroot thrives in acidic soils. Unfortunately, many farms in South Kinangop have low pH soils due to continuous cabbage farming and lack of proper soil management. Applying agricultural lime (calcitic or dolomitic lime) helps raise the soil pH towards neutral (around pH 7), which suppresses the pathogen’s activity.

However, liming is not an instant fix. It’s a slow process that requires planning. Lime should be applied well before planting, preferably during land preparation, to allow it time to react with the soil. Regular soil testing is also important to monitor pH levels.

2. Crop Rotation with Non-Brassicas

One of the reasons clubroot becomes rampant is because farmers plant brassicas season after season on the same land. This allows the disease to build up to harmful levels. A simple but effective solution is crop rotation. Alternating brassicas with non-host crops like legumes (beans, peas) or cereals (maize, wheat) disrupts the life cycle of the pathogen and reduces its population in the soil.

Rotation should be practiced over several seasons—ideally, 3 to 4 years between brassica crops in the same field.

3. Strict Field Hygiene Practices

Clubroot often starts in one small area and spreads across the farm through soil movement. Tools like hoes and pangas, gumboots, and even tractor tires can transfer infected soil to clean areas. Many casual laborers unknowingly spread clubroot when moving from farm to farm without disinfecting their equipment.

To contain the spread, farmers should:

  • Clean and disinfect tools and footwear when moving between fields.
  • Limit unnecessary movement into infected plots.
  • Use footbaths with disinfectants at farm entry points.
  • Simple hygiene measures can drastically reduce the spread of soil-borne diseases.

4. Use of Clubroot-Tolerant or Resistant Varieties

Breeding for clubroot resistance has made progress in recent years. While not always 100% immune, some hybrid cabbage varieties offer tolerance or resistance to clubroot. Using such varieties can reduce the impact of the disease and is a practical solution, especially where clubroot is already present in the soil.

Farmers should consult seed companies and extension officers for recommendations on suitable resistant varieties available in Kenya.

5. Adopt Professional Seedling Propagation

Raising seedlings in traditional open-field nurseries exposes young plants to soil-borne diseases, including clubroot. It’s time farmers shift towards professional propagators who raise seedlings in sterile media under controlled environments. Healthy seedlings are less likely to introduce clubroot into the main field.

Additionally, propagators can offer seedlings treated with biological protectants that help suppress soil-borne pathogens in the early stages.

6. Improve Soil Drainage and Structure

Waterlogged soils create the perfect conditions for clubroot to thrive. Poor drainage is a common issue in Kinangop due to clayey soils and high rainfall. Farmers can:

  • Construct drainage channels.
  • Use raised beds or ridges for planting.
  • Incorporate organic matter like compost to improve soil structure and aeration.
  • Good drainage reduces the moisture levels that clubroot spores need to germinate and infect plants.

7. Biological Treatments (Bio-fungicides and Bactericides)

While not a cure, treating seeds or seedlings with bio-fungicides can suppress the initial infection. Products containing beneficial microbes like Trichoderma or Bacillus subtilis can create a protective barrier around the root zone. These treatments are most effective as a preventive measure and should be part of an integrated management plan.

Long-Term Outlook: Prevention is Better than Cure

Clubroot is not a problem that can be solved overnight. Once your soil is infected, managing it becomes a long-term commitment. But with consistent application of the strategies above, it’s possible to suppress its impact and continue profitable cabbage farming.

For South Kinangop farmers, raising awareness is the first critical step. Farmers need practical training, not just on clubroot but on general soil health management. Agro-dealers and extension officers must also be brought up to speed so they can provide proper advice and avoid misdiagnosing cases as nematodes or other issues.

Investing in better practices today will save farms from bigger losses tomorrow.
