Kenya red meat value chain will receive fresh investment after Heifer International signed agreements with Samburu and Laikipia counties to improve livestock production, market access and pastoralist livelihoods.

Heifer International, Samburu and Laikipia Sign Deal to Strengthen Kenya Red Meat Value Chain

Heifer International Kenya has signed partnership agreements with the county governments of Samburu and Laikipia to strengthen livestock production, improve market access and expand economic opportunities for farmers and pastoralist communities.

The Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) will support the implementation of the Kenya Livestock Marketing and Resilience Project (KLMP), an initiative aimed at improving the country’s red meat value chain through stronger production systems, better livestock marketing and increased private sector investment.

The project is being implemented by Heifer International Kenya with support from the Embassy of Sweden in Nairobi.

Partnership Targets Livestock Production and Markets

Under the agreements, Heifer International will work closely with the two county governments to improve livestock production, strengthen livestock marketing systems and increase access to markets and financial services for livestock producers.

The programme is expected to benefit smallholder livestock farmers and pastoralist communities by creating stronger links between producers, traders, processors and financial institutions.

Officials said improving market access and value addition will help livestock keepers earn better returns while making the red meat sector more competitive.

Building a More Resilient Livestock Sector

The Kenya Livestock Marketing and Resilience Project also seeks to strengthen the resilience of livestock production systems in areas that frequently experience drought and other climate-related challenges.

By supporting improved production practices and market-oriented livestock farming, the project aims to help farmers and pastoralists increase productivity while reducing production risks.

The partnership will also promote investment across the livestock value chain to unlock new business opportunities and stimulate rural economic growth.

Collaboration Between Counties and Development Partners

Heifer International said the agreements demonstrate the importance of collaboration between county governments and development partners in addressing challenges facing Kenya’s livestock sector.

Through the project, Samburu and Laikipia counties are expected to strengthen livestock marketing systems while creating a more inclusive and commercially driven red meat industry.

The partners believe the initiative will contribute to improved livelihoods, increased farmer incomes and sustainable economic development by strengthening every stage of the red meat value chain, from production to marketing.
