Banana farmers in Meru County are recording stronger yields and higher earnings following the rollout of an intensive agribusiness training program funded by the World Bank, the County Government of Meru, and the National Government.

The initiative, under the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP), targets five key value chains — avocado, banana, coffee, dairy, and Irish potato — with the aim of improving productivity, profitability, and competitiveness.

In the latest phase, training sessions for banana farmers were held at Mwiteria Primary School in Ntima East ward and MCK Kaathi Hall in Thangatha ward. Groups of 25 to 40 farmers engaged in hands-on demonstrations covering soil fertility and water management, banana seed systems, climate-smart agronomic practices, pest and disease control, post-harvest handling, value addition, and market linkages.

Lead farmers will pass on these skills to Tier 4 producers in their areas, creating a multiplier effect expected to accelerate the adoption of improved practices across the county.

Agriculture officials say the program’s long-term impact will be greater market participation and higher-value production in the targeted crops.

“This approach equips farmers with practical solutions that translate directly to better harvests and more income,” said an official from the county’s agriculture department. “We are seeing strong interest, especially in banana farming, where market demand continues to grow.”

NAVCDP’s model blends technical training with peer-to-peer learning, positioning farmers to tap into lucrative markets while adopting climate-resilient production methods.
