Improved Chicken Breeds Boost Farmer Incomes in Bomet as KALRO Promotes Better Poultry Farming

Improved chicken breeds are helping farmers in Bomet County increase poultry production, improve household nutrition and generate additional income as farmers adopt better breeds and modern poultry management practices.

The gains have emerged under the Sustainable Animal and Aquatic Foods (SAAF) Project, where scientists from the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) have been working with farmers and other stakeholders to assess the impact of improved poultry genetics and farmer training.

The programme builds on lessons from households that previously participated in the Tropical Poultry Genetic Solutions (TPGS) Project.

Farmers have adopted breeds including KALRO Chicken, Sasso and Kuroiler, which have been combined with training on feeding, housing, disease prevention, biosecurity and human nutrition.

The combination is helping farmers get more value from poultry farming while improving the contribution of chicken to household food and income.

For some farmers in Bomet, poultry has moved beyond being a source of eggs and meat to become a business that finances other investments.

Income earned from chicken farming has enabled farmers to invest in sheep, water wells, retail shops, posho mills and transport businesses.

The experience shows how poultry can provide farmers with a regular source of income that can be reinvested in other farm and household enterprises.

KALRO scientists say improved genetics alone are not enough to transform poultry production. Farmers also need practical knowledge on how to feed, house and protect their birds from diseases.

Proper feeding is particularly important because improved breeds require adequate nutrition to achieve their production potential. Good housing, vaccination, hygiene and biosecurity are also critical in reducing losses and maintaining healthy flocks.

For smallholder farmers, these practices can make the difference between keeping chickens mainly for household consumption and running a poultry enterprise that generates meaningful income.

The experience in Bomet also highlights the wider role of poultry in rural livelihoods.

Chicken require less land than many other livestock enterprises and can be kept by households with relatively small amounts of space. Farmers can also sell eggs, mature birds and breeding stock depending on the type of enterprise they choose.

As demand for poultry products continues to grow, improved chicken breeds are giving farmers an opportunity to increase production while making better use of available resources.

The progress recorded by farmers involved in the KALRO programmes also points to the importance of combining improved breeds with farmer education.

A productive breed will not deliver good results if farmers lack the knowledge, feed, housing and disease-control measures required to manage it properly.

For farmers in Bomet, the results are increasingly being seen not only in their chicken houses but also in their homes, farms and businesses.

The lesson is straightforward: better breeds, combined with better poultry management, can give farmers a stronger source of food and income.
